Signe got pink eye this morning, so I took her to Iinan Hostipal. I might get it around tomorrow, too, since pink eye is highly contagious. Actually, I have been feeling like a cold is coming since last night. Anyway, aside from this morning nothing too exciting happened today. I have been down in the dumps recently, so I want to get better soon!

We learned about proverbs today in the 9th grade elective English class. I think it is important for anyone learning English, or any language for that matter, to study and know proverbs. It is hard for me to remember them though. They go in one ear and out the other, but I will try hard to remember them. Actually, these days I have a hard time retaining anything I learn, so my studying power is slowly decreasing. I don't know what to do about it.

This weekend was busy, but fun. I went to an audition to be an actor in a short film in Matsue on Saturday. I'm not an actor though, so I think that the part will be given to someone else. After that I went and saw the new Harry Potter movie. I thought it was really good. In the evening we went to a big Thanksgiving dinner with a bunch of foreigners and Japanese people. I don't go to most of the Matsue events, but this one was really fun.

I wrote an article for the Shimane JET Community Newsletter, The Black Taxi, about Free Speech today. I have been studying American History for the Foreign Service Exam lately, but I haven't been practicing writing essays yet, so writing an article for The Black Taxi is a good way to practice in my opinion. It is easier for me to write if I have motivation to do so.

We studied cryptology in my favorite 9th grade elective English class today. I made a scytale to show the kids. A scytale is a simple encrpytion system. You take a strip of paper and wrap it around a stick, then you write a message on the paper. Someone with the same type of stick as you can rewind the paper around their stick and decipher the message, but if you don't have the stick the message makes no sense. Pretty cool, huh?

I was busy all weekend going to the Akagi JHS culture festival and the Akana Ele. culture festival. The kids worked really hard to put on a great show. I will be going to the Kijima one next weekend. Nov. is always busy for Japanese schools because of culture festivals. Oct. is also busy because of sports festivals, so for JHS and Ele. in Japan, Fall is the busiest season.

Yesterday was the Sada JHS International School Day. Foreigners from all over the world came to spend the day there. I have gone to this event every year since I have become an ALT. At Sada JHS they have this event instead of a culture festival so it is very important, especially for the 9th graders. So I worked hard to be as up beat and high energy as I could all day. It went really well, but I am so tired today.

Today before the 9th grade English class, a boy, Mr. D, punched a girl, Ako, multiple times. And not just joke punches, real fight-like full-on punches. Ako is a srong woman, so she didn't cry, but men hitting women is totally wrong. If this were America, Mr. D would have been sent to the principal's office and his parents would be called, but here in Japan they do nothing.

Yesterday was a conpensatory holiday for this upcoming Saturday's Culture Festival, so I stayed at home with Signe, who always has Mondays off, and relaxed. Every now and again it is nice to have those types of days. Today I returned to work and had my favorite 9th grade elective English class where we talked about this year's upcoming flu plan. While we were talking about it, we got to discuss various countries health care systems! :)

For some odd reason, this was a good day. The classes I taught were all fine, but the kids seemed more upbeat than usual. Especially the 9th graders. Ahh! I am SOOOOOO lucky! My school, my coworkers, my students, my town, my Japanese life, it's all so great! Of course I have bad days, but I think that my life is better than a lot of foreigners here.

I was busy with four classes today. We talked about the history of the Louvre in my favorite 9th Grade elective English class today. 212 years ago today the Louvre opened to the public. Before the French Revolution the Louvre was a palace. The prince of the palace loved art, so the new French government turned it into an art museum.

Today was a normal Monday. Since it is the 7th of the month, I wrote my Trev Report in my free time. I didn't have anything groundbreaking to report, but no news is good news, I suppose. This afternoon, Ms. Suyama had me make a worksheet for tomorrow's 8th grader English class, so we will be using something I made in class tomorrow. That is pretty cool.
Hello everybody, and welcome once again to your monthly Trev Report. Wherein there contains many accounts of that which I have been accompany to in the preceding month. Without further ado, on with the report!
Trev's Lovelife --------------- Signe's new job in Hamada is working out great. she is working four days a week and keeping quite busy. She is also reapplying for the JET Programme this year, so we are both holding our breath on that as well. We have been keeping busy in our free time too, socializing, etc. There is a really good group of people here and we are getting out with them a lot more that we had been in the past few years. Signe just got an iPod for her 1 1/2 trips to Hamada every week. It will be nice to have all of our music on one portable device while we are traveling.
Trev's Study ------------ I am still dead set on taking the Foreign Service Written Exam next year at the Osaka Consulate, so I continue to study for it. I am currently reading a book called "Realities of Foreign Service Life" that is written by the spouses and other associates of foreign service officers and specialists. It really gives you a glimpse into the personal lives of foreign service officials and their families. I recently finished reading "Inside the U.S. Embassy," which is all about the different roles inside the embassies, but doesn't explore the personal side at all. I think that reading the two books together might give you a real feel about how life works in a modern-day embassy. I still have a lot of books to read and news to digest, but I am coming along. I started feeling that I was neglecting my Japanese study, so I ordered some Kanji flashcards and go through one a day, writing out many different vocabulary words that have the kanji I am studying in them. It isn't all out studying, but it is helpful. Between that and writing in my blog in Japanese and English, and speaking it everyday for the audioblog, I feel that I am doing OK with my Japanese.
Trev's Work ----------- Work is going well. It really is as same as ever. After 2 1/2 years of doing the job, I have fallen into a good pattern. I work well with my JTEs and I like talking with my students. I go to elementary schools twice a month, and always have a good time there as well. As for next year, unfortunately, I cannot keep this same position for more than 3 years, but there is a chance that I will be able to transfer to a larger city and work in elementary schools for a fourth and fifth year in the JET Programme. Currently there are seven of these types of positions in Shimane Prefecture, and two of those positions will be open for sure come February when I can apply for them. I don't know about the rest, I can only hope. In any case, if I don't make it, and Signe does, I will just follow her wherever she goes on the JET Programme. If neither of us make it we will have to scramble to find private teaching jobs before we have to return to the U.S., three months after our work visas expire. Whatever happens, we will be up for it.
Trev's Computers ---------------- All the computers are running OK. Nothing horribly wrong with any of them. I haven't been doing much with them except to watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report everyday. We also use it to watch Desperate Housewives and Lost each week as well. When Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica come back on in January, we will start watching them again, too. I am still doing my blog every workday and recording it for all to hear, but I don't think too many people listen to it, that won't stop me, though!
Trev's One Point Japanese Lesson -------------------------------- So you want to learn some Japanese? That's great! Let's review how to conjugate nounal adjectives or na-adjectives.
A na-adjective like suki-na (like) is conjugated like this: present positive: suki-na or suki-desu past positive: suki-deshita present negative: suki-ja arimasen past negative: suki-ja arimasen deshita
Keep up your studies and work hard! Japanese can be a fun and rewarding language to learn!
That's about it for this time. Drop me a line sometime, I always like hearing from you, and if you are interested in a more play-by-play portrait of my life narrated by yours truly, check out the blog at http://www.trevreport.org/blog/ and listen to the recordings there. Until next month, take care and have fun!

My legs are killing me today. Yesterday I went walking all over Kakeya with a friend of mine. It was really fun. Kakeya has a golf course, so we took the only golf club my buddy owns and went to the driving range to hit a few balls. The weather was perfect for a vacation day. We had a great time.

I wasn't really all that busy today with only two classes to teach. I'l be going home to an empty house tonight, since Signe is teaching in Hamada, as she does every Wednesday and Thursday. Tomorrow is a school holiday called "Culture Day," so I would like to spend it with other ALTs, but I might end up in my house alone. That isn't too big of a deal though. I have books to read and games to play on the Internet, but I would much rather spend the day with other people.

I taught the 9th grade elective English class by myself today because Ms. Mishima was at the local Akana Town Festival this morning. Today's theme was the history of Halloween. It really makes me happy to teach kids that like English. I hated studying Spanish in High School, so I totally understand the Japanese kids that don't like learning English, but then again as a teacher of English, of course I will like the students that like English more.
